America, A Patriotic Primer

Happy Independence Day! Today’s post is a short picture book recommendation themed to this summer holiday. If you’re curious about finding books that are about America’s independence then you’ll want to read this post. America, A Patriotic Primer, by Lynne Cheney is an excellent book that teaches about the importance of our country and why we celebrate it on this day.

Happy Independence Day!

Hello everyone! It’s Independence Day, the day where we celebrate the freedom of our country. Despite its meaning, for most of us this holiday simply means fireworks, cookouts, and cold summer treats. Even though we know the historical significance behind this day it’s easy to forget what that has to do with our traditions.

Well, the good news is that books are a wonderful way to solve this problem. 😉 They have a way of revealing truths we’d forgotten about, and that’s why they are such a good way to focus back on the real meaning of Independence Day. The book I’m discussing is especially beautiful and will make for a lovely read today!

A Picture Book for the Holiday

America, A Patriotic Primer is a beautiful picture book that uses the alphabet to tell the history of America. The illustrations (done by the very same person who illustrated the Fancy Nancy books, Robin Preiss Glasser!) are gorgeous and have just the right touch of sweet fun to them that makes them exciting to look at.

The first few words are to be expected, such as America, Birthday, Constitution, and Declaration. The letters after that are used to represent many other aspects of America, from the men who made it great to the qualities that keep it so. The book as a whole proclaims the shining story of our country and the countless images and notes can keep you poring over its pages for a long time.

Read Last Year’s Post!

Last year I wrote a post highlighting a few of my favorite patriotic songs. I discussed some of their most profound lines, their meaning, and the history behind them being written. You can find that post here if you’re interested in reading it. 🙂

Final Thoughts

There are picture books for nearly every occasion. The fourth of July might not seem to be the most book oriented holiday, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t good books that can be read during it. This book is a lovely read and I hope you will check it out if you ever have the opportunity.
