Cozy Winter Reading

Where I live we have been having bitterly cold weather. As in, we have remained in freezing temperatures for the better part of the week, and everything is frozen solid. I can’t remember it ever being this cold for so long!

There is something about waking up to find all the water frozen, and the window pane cold to my fingers that I love. It reminds me that winter can be beautiful in its own way. Winter is often the season we look down on, impatiently waiting for the first flower to bloom and sing the song of a new season. The days are shorter, and darkness comes more quickly, easing our minds into less lovely moods.

But there are things about every season that are good and wonderful, and winter brings a whole host of treasures no other season does. Something especially nice about this time of year is the opportunity to build your reading habit. The early setting of the sun leaves us in darkness that can pleasantly be used for cozy reading.

Making Yourself Cozy

There are so many ways to make your reading time extra cozy. You don’t have to have snow falling quietly outside or a fire roaring in your fireplace (though those both sound quite nice) to use the dark cold days of winter to your reading advantage.

The very obvious step is to find a comfy place to sit. You can choose a soft chair or couch and wrap yourself in your favorite blanket. Something else that I personally feel will make you even cozier is making yourself a nice warm drink. You could heat up some milk and make yourself some delicious hot chocolate, or just pour a cup of tea.

Winter Reading Suggestions

Any book is wonderful for reading at any time of the year, but if you are looking for a new read anyway, here are some books I think would make especially good winter reads. Most of them tend of be classics, because I can’t think of a better book to read on a cold winter’s day than the familiar comforting words of a classic story.

The first title on my list is Little Women, because it’s certainly a long haul, perfect for long reading sessions. An easier read is the Little House books. I can’t think of a better series to read in the winter than these (The Long Winter especially, which has the season in its title 😉 ). You might also take this as an opportunity to explore a non fiction subject, or read long passages out of the Bible.

Final Thoughts

Winter reading is an opportunity to defy the desolateness of days that early nights by making them into something lovely and peaceful.

How do you feel about winter? Do you enjoy the early evenings, and have you ever tried to make them feel cozy and warm through reading?

  1. Hello, I love your Winter Reading Suggestions as I am a huge fan of Laura Ingalls Wilder and I love the Little Women books. I can remember reading The Long Winter for the first time, imagining how they coped in those freezing cold temperatures and feeling very grateful for my warm blanket and cup of tea!! 😁
