An Invitation to Reread this Fall

Hello, hello friends! I hope you are all having a wonderful month so far. Can you believe it’s September already? I’m so excited for the fall weather. 🙂 It has been lovely outside this past week where I live. Yesterday I took a walk and found some acorns (yay!).

We may still have nearly a month until the actual first day of fall, but there’s no harm in anticipating it. One thing that I’m especially looking forward to is rereading my favorite book, Anne of Green Gables. I’ve established a routine of rereading it every October without realizing it and now I can’t imagine not doing so.

Today I want to invite you to join me in rereading a book that you love. Pick a favorite book off your shelf and read it again this autumn. Maybe it’s a book you read over again every year, or maybe you haven’t read it since you were a young child, but either way there is something especially comforting about rereading during this time of year.

Reminders of the Past

I don’t know what it is about the fall that reminds me of the past. Perhaps it’s the feeling of small traditions coming true. Finding acorns on the road, stepping on crinkly leaves, savoring the cool air. These are rituals I go through every year. Every year when fall comes it is like a fresh beginning. The start of a new year.

But the beginning is familiar. Perhaps it’s simply because this is my very favorite season, but to me autumn is a reminder of the wonderful things of the past. Wonderful things that are happening again.

Rereading enhances that feeling in another way. It’s a chance to relive the stories I love while savoring the pleasures of the season.

Warm and Cozy

As if that isn’t reason enough to whip out your favorite books, fall also happens to be a wonderful time for reading in general. Are you starting to see why this is the best time for rereading?

As the evening comes earlier each day there seems to be more time for sitting and resting. As the temperature drops it’s time to pull out the sweaters and bring out the warm blankets. Start a cup of tea over the stove (or coffee or hot chocolate, or whatever you so desire), and settle down for a delightful time with a good book. What more could you ask for?

Rereading Suggestions

I made a quick list of rereading suggestions for you in case you’re in need of some inspiration in your rereading (of course, they also work perfectly well for first time readers as well 😉 ).

  • Anne of Green Gables, by L. M. Montgomery
  • Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott
  • The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, by C. S. Lewis
  • Winnie-the-Pooh, by A.A. Milne
  • Farmer Boy, by Laura Ingalls Wilder

I wrote a post awhile ago specifying why it’s good to reread in general, and you can find that post right here. It’s one of my favorite blog posts, so I think you might enjoy it.

Final Thoughts

Rereading is a special kind of pleasure for the reader, and I can’t think of anything that goes with this coming season quite so well. Do you plan on rereading any books this autumn? Share your reading anticipation in the comments!

  1. I’m actually hoping to try new stories this month lol, though I do have one that I’d like to reread soon. It’s called The Night Flyers by Elizabeth McDavid Jones. I read it for school years ago and wanted to try it again (it covers the WWI American Era, and is a bit of a mystery.)
